or the other person is very different...

he's exactly the same.

Luckily, the storylines have been so,

you know, the writing's so good...

...and we've been able to really

dig deep into it, and...

...monumental deaths on this show,

and when we look back...

...at some of the characters who I still

am in therapy over. Oh, my God.

on my mental health.

But primarily with Bonnie and Jeremy's

death, I think of Nina's performance...

...breaking down over those deaths,

and it kills me every single time.

But how do you go through the process

of deciding which deaths stick...

...and which deaths don't.

And also making sure that we feel

the gravity, like with Katherine, to me...

...in my mind, that seems like a death

that probably won't be undone...

...the way in which it was shot.

So, can you just talk about the process

of in the writers' room.

Talking about these deaths

and also deciding...

...when someone's

going to come back. Um...

How difficult is that process?

Well, something like Katherine, we knew

...that we were gonna tell this beautiful

terminalillness story with Katherine.

And she's gonna be redeemed

We were like, "Oh, actually, we might

be able to make this even more dramatic...

...if we do what we ended up doing."

But, um So something like that

is you think about that all season long.

And somebody like

one of my favorite characters Wes, Dr. Wes...

...his death was this fun moment for Damon.

SOMERHALDER: it was great.

You're like, you know what.

Here's how you're gonna die.

Right here and now. It's gonna come

out of nowhere in a shock.

Most characters are created to die really.

And I mean that, like, not being glib.

Most new characters, excuse me,

are created to die

WESLEY: Are any series regulars gonna die?

Wow, that's Like, what an amazing thing.

"Hey, you just got this really great role,

but you were created to die."

PLEC:

Yeah. So

So their death

They're de

Their death and their return

can be earned by a lot of things.

One, a fandom that really just can't

Doesn't wanna let go of a character,

you know?

A writer or a team of writers that

doesn't wanna let go of a character.

A story where somebody's death

and resurrection...

...actually plays into the overall narrative.

And, you know, I think

And then there's occasionally where,

like, somebody wants to leave the show...

...and you gotta let them go...

...so there's all kinds of different

GIRL: Damon, do the eye thing.

Uncle John died. John died.

That's amazing.

They give this, like, really long answer...

...and it's all, like, you know

it's this intellectual answer.

And all of a sudden there's silence

and it's like, "Damon, do the eye thing."

That's literally

AUDIENCE CHEERING

It's five years, it's a half of a decade...

...and ultimately, the relationships

that have, uh, spawned...

...we can call it, from this interaction

and this show...

...they're very deeply rooted in our lives.

And so when you lose a character...

DOBREV: it's really hard.

...it's fricking hard, man. And

Howdy. But ultimately, it's a very crazy,

like, very deep thing...

...like, when you lose a character.

When we lost, say, you know, Alaric,

it was like

it was a really ****** thing.

Like, "Wow, man, there goes Matt Davis...

...from our lives, from the show,

from, you know, my speed dial."

...you realize no one is safe.

that was kind of an intimate thing.
